How Google detects invalid clicks

A recent report on Click Fraud suggests that the maximum number of invalid clicks on Pay Per Click ads originate from India. And this is not the first time- its widely believed there there exists a large “work from home” crowd in India who want to generate “quick cash” by clicking Google AdSense ads. Not only India but also several states have same methodology
.

Is click fraud have increased in recent months?
It’s difficult to say if the click frauds are increased or not. Google filter out fewer than 10% of clicks as invalid, but you can’t draw a very precise line between malicious activity and invalid clicks that might have been made with malicious intent. Anyone spending time looking at the percentage changes in something where you can’t draw a precise line doesn’t understand the issue.
One metric Goole do have is the number of cases in which they refund advertisers for click fraud, and that has remained stable at less than .02%, quarter after quarter.

How do they monitor Click frauds?
There aren’t any silver bullets to detect the click frauds. There are some very simple things, like watching the click-through rate. It’s easy to catch someone who clicks a million times in a minute. But we also have anomaly detection that allows us to spot more sophisticated kinds of click fraud.

Google monitor signals like Internet protocol addresses and the kinds of browsers people use–for traffic to look real, it has to have the right proportion of visitors using the Firefox browser, Internet Explorer, et. cetera. This means that you must have the real traffic to earn real money. For example 1 week old website can’t earn 10 dollar daily, not even they can earn if there is right proportion of impressions and CTRs.

Another example can be, that you have a blog where you earn say $15 daily. Then Google always tries to find out how did you earned that much? Your CTR, your eCPM, your impressions ,etc are the basic things that google checks out. Not only this, Google also searches for your traffic rank, your daily unique hits. If you have say 10 unique visits daily and each of those unique visits gives say 20 impressions to your site and 2 click to any of your Ads, then Google will have more widen eyes towards you. Because You can’t have regular click and regular impressions for every unique hits.

Here are some of the basic things Google will look for:

Cookies
You may think that most, just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don’t forget, Google has set cookies on your computer. They can trace these cookies and see whether they originate from the same computer.

Click patterns It is suspicious when people click on their clicks and then run away immediately . But normally, people will surf for a while inside your pages and then click on the ads whichever they find interesting. It is also suspicious when an IP address clicks often and happily on the particular website but never click on the ads on other sites. Also it is suspicious when people access these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?

Search Engine Ranking
Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? How come people can access your website and click your ads?

Physical Location
Google has good tracing software and technology. They can trace traffics origin down to the small town. So, using different computers with different IP address does not secure anything. So, don’t try to click your ads in various internet cafes.

Apart from Google Adsense, Google also provide a series of services to us. Don’t just think that it is safe if you do not log in your adsense account and click on your ads. What other Google services do they provide to us? Here are some: Gmail (most poeple are using it), Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, or even Youtube or any other partner of Google.

But the real power of their detection systems lies in the fact that they analyze hundreds of different factors, the majority of which are secret.
